The Song Killer

One of the biggest problems is self-criticism. Many songwriters try and determine if their work is good as they are writing, and often give up on the song.

The best thing is to reserve your judgment and just keep writing the song.

Wait until it is finished, then show it to someone for their opinion. Make sure this person is not too close a friend (or they will just tell you it's good so as not to hurt your feelings). But make sure this person does have a good taste of music too!

Even if you do write something that is pretty bad, it is still a positive because you were at least writing. It's like anything in life, the more you do something, the better you get at it!

You might even be able to take a bad song and re-work it into a great song!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://topsongwritingtips.blogspot.com/2009/03/writers-block-song-killer.html' title='Writers Block ... Not so at all ... although it doesn't hurt!

So really, it doesn't matter if you are classically trained and hold a degree in music, or if you are only a self taught musician, you will be able to write music using some simple tools and techniques.

Here is some interesting trivia ...

Songwriters who have formal music education
Quincy Jones
Ray Charles
Sheryl Crow
Bo Diddley
Marvin Gaye

Songwriters who did NOT have formal music education
Barry White
Pete Townshend
John Lennon

These are just a handful of songwriters from both sides of the coin.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://topsongwritingtips.blogspot.com/2009/03/1st-thing-first-your-training.html' title='1st Thing First ...
