1st Thing First ... Your Training

Your Background

Many people believe (incorrectly) that they must be formally trained in the theory of music. (That a classical training is necessary). Not so at all ... although it doesn't hurt!

So really, it doesn't matter if you are classically trained and hold a degree in music, or if you are only a self taught musician, you will be able to write music using some simple tools and techniques.

Here is some interesting trivia ...

Songwriters who have formal music education
Quincy Jones
Ray Charles
Sheryl Crow
Bo Diddley
Marvin Gaye

Songwriters who did NOT have formal music education
Barry White
Pete Townshend
John Lennon

These are just a handful of songwriters from both sides of the coin.
